Blog Update #6 Part 2: Alpha Prototype Design & Reflection

Updated: Nov 29, 2021

Since the last blog post, the final touches have been applied to Melodi's chassis to accommodate its new internal layout. LA NPDT has provided the following renderings:

These images represent the final look of Melodi's first physical model, running Windows 11. The prototype will feature 1 Micro-USB, an SD Card slot, 2 USB-A 3.1, 2 USB-C, HDMI, and AUX as its ports. For more information on its electronic components, please get in touch with me directly.

Below is a direct comparison between the electronic design (left) and the alpha prototype design (right).

The following are the most notable changes to Melodi's design:

  • The piano keys' design has been revamped.

    • Noticeable changes include decreased length and depth. Internally, the keys have been reshaped, so they make proper contact with the MIDI PCB.

      • As a result, the drum pad module was moved somewhat downward.

  • The piano keys' lighting will be translucent instead of RGB.

    • Using RGB would cause technical complications and slow down development. Therefore, this feature is scrapped for the first generation.

  • Larger fan vents have been imposed in place of where the original power buttons used to be.

    • Now, a single power button has been added inside the top-right corner of Melodi's chassis.

  • The EFX Channels' controls are now more-centered.

  • The kickstands now flip out vertically instead of horizontally.

  • The bottom of the chassis features Melodi's patent number (US 10984770B2), the 2020 Sound logo, and the text "Invented by DJ NoMis" (the founder's stage name).

    • The air vent was also moved upward to accommodate new fan placement.

  • Both sides feature a CD-player-like slot where the connector ports are located.

The front page's animation has been updated to reflect this new design. Melodi's alpha prototype is expected to be ready between December 2021 - January 2022, but this timeline is not definitive.

As a reflection of Melodi's progress thus far, the following gallery has been attached to display each significant step:
