Blog Update #8: Alpha Prototype's MIDI Board Status

Engineers often face Murphy's Law during prototype development: "If anything can go wrong, it will." Although we've moved past supply chain/production issues with Melodi's boards, we now face a new dilemma: programming custom firmware.
It was initially planned to recycle code from a proof-of-concept prototype, achieve basic MIDI functionality, and then incorporate advanced features through code expansion. Instead, we have found ourselves reinventing the wheel, as LA NPDT's MIDI board design is vastly unique and complex.
Recent Development Journey
Since the last blog post, LA NPDT successfully retrieved fully functional boards; all chips communicate correctly with one another, there are no electrical issues, and they successfully execute code. We are nearly past this process; we are almost confident the last portrayed design will be used in the prototype.
Sadly, getting the boards to function correctly is another situation. They've encountered issues with Melodi misinterpreting all the MIDI buttons; notes are either mismatched or improperly inputted. According to Konstantin Dolgan, Project Manager, custom firmware is necessary for Melodi's features, as their board design is more advanced than what's available in today's MIDI Controller market. Please refer to the videos below.
State of Functionality as of June 2, 2023
Prior Functionality Progress
What Happens Now?
From here, LA NPDT will continue programming their MIDI boards toward correct functionality. Although progress is slow and sporadic, they feel confident they will see this through and are doing all they can. However, if there is minimal progress and a lack of consistency with MIDI outputs, we must not weigh out pursuing a fourth board re-design. It seems unlikely, but so be it if that's what it'll take to proceed.
Once the firmware is stable and finalized, we can build Melodi's chassis and house all the electronics. The timeline for the remaining progress is unknown. Still, we've made it this far; LA NPDT and I are far from succumbing. I will keep in touch as we continue making progress.
